Def L/Sgt Mddox. Was with him in Recce 72/73.We both had the unfortunate luck to be given The Recce Version of A Ferret Scout Car.The one with The Gun Turret removed.I was The Driver and Graham was The Commander.lovely in the summer but bloody freezing in the middle of a German Winter.

Graham Maddocks and "Dusty" Smith. Graham had a close call one night move in said recce ferret in Germany. Cross-country move minus lights, a wheel dropped into a ditch and turned the vehicle over. Luckily, the ferret wedged itself in the ditch and both got out unscathed.

    Remember it well timber.
It was me and Graham in The Ferret. Graham was driving at the time to give me a break as we had been on the go for over 24 hrs. It was pitch dark and we did a right over a man made bridge over the ditch, next thing the rear right wheel slid into the ditch and I remember was being thrown out and landing in the ditch and then looking up and seeing The Ferret sliding to-wards me.As I was trying to scrabble clear I still had my headset on and clipped to my jacket.Luckily the ditch was v shaped and The Ferret became wedged otherwise I don't think I would be here to tell this story.
The only other bad thing about it was I got soaked in petrol which leaked out because The Ferret ended up completely turned over.As all our spare kit was stowed on the engine cowling we could not access it.I remember us making a make shift shelter out of our ponchos and spent the rest of the night sheltering under that. I was gagging for a fag but could not have one as one spark and I would have gone up like A Roman Candle.
    Good Old Days.
Often wonder where Graham is these days.

    All The Best.
